Overview

The HTPC project delivered a compact but capable living-room media machine built around a modern desktop platform instead of a fragile pile of repurposed parts. The goal was to end up with a system that looked intentional, handled local playback and network media duties cleanly, and remained easy to maintain as a real machine rather than a one-off experiment.

The finished build combines desktop-class CPU and GPU performance with an HTPC-friendly case, quiet cooling, fast local storage, and enough flexibility to serve as both a media endpoint and an always-available home streaming/download box.

Project Outcome

The project was completed as a full hardware build and setup effort.

It resulted in a finished HTPC that:

  • serves as a dedicated home theater/media system
  • supports local and network streaming workloads
  • provides a stable platform for download and media-management workflows
  • consolidates those functions into a single maintainable machine

The final value of the project was not just the assembled hardware, but the shift from an ad hoc media setup to a deliberate, documented system with a clear purpose and component model.

Goals

The build was intended to satisfy a few practical requirements at the same time:

  • fit cleanly into a home theater environment
  • avoid underpowered small-box compromises
  • stay straightforward to service and upgrade
  • provide enough performance headroom for modern media and general-purpose desktop tasks
  • support downstream software configuration for streaming and automated media workflows

In practice, that meant prioritizing a balanced build: strong enough to be pleasant, compact enough to belong in an entertainment setup, and standard enough that replacement parts and future changes would not be painful.

Hardware Platform

The completed system was built around the following component set:

This hardware mix reflects the actual character of the project: a real desktop-class system in an HTPC-oriented enclosure, not an ultra-low-power thin client or disposable appliance.

Build Decisions

A few design choices defined the project.

Desktop-class performance in an HTPC form factor

Rather than optimize only for minimum size or minimum power draw, the project favored a more capable platform that could comfortably handle media duties while still feeling like a serious computer. That choice improved longevity and kept the machine useful beyond a single narrow role.

Standard components over exotic solutions

The build stayed close to mainstream desktop parts. That kept the machine easier to troubleshoot, upgrade, and document, and reduced the risk of ending up with a clever but annoying system.

Quiet, serviceable packaging

The Grandia 11 case and 240 mm AIO combination supported the goal of building something that could live in a home theater environment without feeling like a temporary bench build. Even more than raw performance, the success criterion was whether the machine felt intentional in day-to-day use.

Build and Configuration Work

The project broke down into three broad phases.

Procurement

Parts were selected as a coherent platform rather than accumulated opportunistically. The component set balanced CPU/GPU capability, thermal fitment, storage speed, case constraints, and overall practicality for the intended role.

Assembly

The physical build brought the chosen platform into the HTPC enclosure, with attention paid to fitment, cooling, cabling, and the realities of packing desktop hardware into a more constrained case layout.

System setup

Once assembled, the machine was configured for its actual job: network media access, streaming, and download-adjacent workflows. That final phase is what turned the hardware from a completed PC build into a finished HTPC system.

Resulting System Role

The completed machine occupies a useful middle ground:

  • more capable than a simple streaming box
  • more purpose-built than a generic spare desktop
  • easier to maintain than a scattered set of media tools spread across multiple devices

That made it a good fit for a home setup where media consumption, local services, and occasional broader desktop-class tasks all benefit from living on one reliable platform.

Why This Project Matters

The HTPC project is a good example of preferring a coherent system over a convenience hack. Instead of accepting a fragile stack of partial solutions, the project established a single, well-defined machine with clear hardware, clear purpose, and a documented shape.

That is ultimately what makes it worth documenting: it is not just a list of parts, but a finished piece of household infrastructure.
